Piedmont College to host Athens drug seminar

“Illicit Drugs and Their Impact on the Community” is the topic of a one-day seminar to be held May 15 at the Piedmont College Athens campus.

Sponsored by Piedmont College and the Atlanta Division of the Drug Enforcement Administration, the conference will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost for the seminar is $10 and includes lunch at the college, located at 565 Prince Avenue.

Sessions will examine the impact of illicit drugs on drug epidemiology, gangs and juveniles; illicit laboratories; potential solutions; and current and future trends. The targeted audience includes law enforcement, academia, non-governmental organizations, health care professionals, social workers and other individuals interested in the topic of illicit drugs in the northeast Georgia area.

The keynote speaker will be Kenneth W. Mauldin, District Attorney for the Western Judicial Circuit. Presenters will include Dr. Merrill Norton of the University of Georgia; Felicia Fortson and Brian Patterson of the Athens-Clarke County District Attorney’s Office; Michael Karnbach of the Georgia Drugs and Narcotics Agency; and Miriam Boeri of Kennesaw State University.
