Truvy Jones runs a successful beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies in the neighborhood have a standing Saturday appointment. Along with her anxious and eager assistant, Annelle, Truvy styles the hair of many of the women about town: wealthy widow and former first lady of Chinquapin Clairee Belcher, local curmudgeon Ouiser Boudreaux, intelligent and compassionate career woman M’Lynn, and her daughter Shelby, the prettiest girl in town. Shelby’s engagement is the talk of the town, but the joy and excitement of her wedding quickly turn to concern as she faces a risky pregnancy and a myriad of health complications.

Eventually, when Shelby dies from complications related to her diabetes, M’Lynn has to deal with the most difficult of life’s challenges: the loss of one’s only child. As the women of Chinquapin make their way over life’s many hurdles together, they find comfort (and a fair amount of verbal ribbing) in one another. “You have no idea how wonderful you are,” M’Lynn tells the ladies at the end of the play. Truvy responds, with a smile, “Of course we do.”

Thursday-Saturday shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday's matinee begins at 2 p.m.

Great Composers Concert

April 26, 2025
7:30 pm | Piedmont University Chapel

The Great Composers Concert is a standout event that celebrates the timeless brilliance of classical music. Featuring exceptional performances of works by some of the world’s most renowned composers, this concert offers an inspiring experience for music lovers and the Piedmont University community. We are proud to present this remarkable showcase of musical talent year after year and to share the beauty of these masterpieces with our students, faculty, and guests.

This year's Great Composers Concert will be directed by Bobby Ivey, Piedmont University Assistant Professor and Director of Choirs, featuring the Piedmont Chorale along with Ellawyn Ketch, soprano, Joshua DeVane, baritone, Dr. John Coble, organ, Julie Koenig, harp, Michele Mariage Volz, violin, and Dr. Heejin Park, piano.

Another highlight for this concert will include Piedmont music alumni, Piedmont Singers, and the Piedmont Chorale combining to perform Cantique de Jean Racine, Op. 11, another beautiful masterpiece of Fauré.

The French composer Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) was one of the foremost French composers of his time, influencing many 20th-century composers. His Requiem is unique because it leaves behind the anguish, loss, and horrors typically associated with Death and Judgement Day. Fauré concentrates on the true meaning of the word “Requiem” or “rest.” His Requiem is about peaceful acceptance and release, and the music is serene, elevating, and comforting.

The Great Composers Concert will be performed on Saturday, April 26th, at 7:30 PM in the Piedmont University Chapel.

The community is invited to attend. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and students. Ticket sales support our music students and allow us to continue to provide the community with exceptional musical performances. Tickets may be purchased by visiting: Piedmont.edu/tickets

The Piedmont University Chapel is located at 992Central Ave., Demorest, GA 30535.
