Piedmont Nursing Graduates Take Part in Pinning Ceremony
At last week's pinning ceremonies, there were happy tears, hugs, and hoorays all around for our nursing graduates! To mark the completion of their coursework, each graduate received a pin from a loved one or mentor of their choosing to symbolically welcome them to the nursing profession. Several students also received awards based on nominations by the nursing faculty and their peers. The names of the award winners and all graduates are listed below. We are so proud of these students!
The Nightingale Award
Florence Nightingale is revered as the pioneer of professional nursing practice and is credited with rooting the practice of nursing firmly within the realm of science. In the spirit of Nightingale’s contribution to the profession, each year the nursing faculty presents an award to the best overall nursing graduate.

The Nelle Arrendale Award
The Arrendale family has generously supported Piedmont University and the R.H. Daniel School of Nursing and Health Sciences in a number of ways including the enhancement of our nursing skills laboratory. Nelle Arrendale, a passionate nurse and the inspiration of this award, has been described as a fun loving, kind, and compassionate person who was loved by all who knew her. This award honors the graduate that has shown the most compassion and kindness.

The Daedalus Award
According to Greek mythology, Daedalus was a famous Athenian architect, inventor and craftsman. Greek myths amuse us with tales of Daedalus accomplishing feats of intellect and ingenuity. In the spirit of inspiration and ingenuity, the faculty would like to honor the graduate that has shown the most initiative and creativity in nursing.

Light the Lamp
Imagine the historic image of the nurse – One pictures a caring soul making her way through the darkness with an oil lamp to illuminate her path as she makes her rounds. The lamp serves to light the way, without disturbing those who sleep while bringing comfort to those whom sleep has evaded. Each year the faculty honors the graduate who seems to have overcome the most obstacles and shown great determination and perseverance throughout the journey.
Athens Campus Winners: Tommy Do and Samuel Risse
Demorest Campus Winner: Ashlyn McEntyre and Courtney Miller
Ruby Bradley Leadership Award
Col. Ruby Bradley of the US Army Nurse Corps was the most highly decorated army nurse, receiving 34 medals and citations for bravery during her military career. Her leadership, bravery, and selfless service of the US military and the nursing profession spanned nearly three decades. In the spirit of Col. Bradley’s exemplary leadership and service, we would like to honor the graduate who has consistently exhibited leadership skills throughout the nursing school experience.
