If you have a degree and background in art – or an education degree in another concentration – this coursework and the requisite clinical experiences will make you eligible for state certification as an art educator. Program length varies based on certification requirements and the candidate’s prior academic record; however, a minimum of 15 hours of coursework must be taken at Piedmont University. After a transcript analysis, an individual program of study will be developed with your art education advisor. Candidates may be eligible to receive experiential credit for Internship I, but Internship II and Internship III must be completed at Piedmont. Additionally, candidates must apply for and be admitted to teacher education and pass the Georgia’s certification assessment in the content area of art education.
Your educational journey will be planned and developed with you and your advisor based on courses you have taken at the masters level. A minimum of 15 hours of course work in addition to your internships must be completed at Piedmont University. See courses offered in the Master’s of Arts in Teaching in Art Education.
You already know the profound impact art has had on your life, but turning that passion into a full-time career can sometimes feel uncertain. A teaching certificate offers you a stable, fulfilling career that combines your love for art with the opportunity to teach, providing job security regardless of changes within the arts community.
Piedmont’s education certification program will empower you to share your passion for art with others. Just as there was likely a teacher who inspired and nurtured your artistic talents, you have the chance to become that same mentor for a new generation. Teaching art isn’t just about creating—it’s about making a lasting impact on students, fostering their growth, and nurturing their love for the arts.
To qualify for Piedmont’s Education Certificate, applicants must have a master’s degree with a 2.5 cumulative GPA from an accredited college or university. To complete the application process, candidates must submit the following:
- Graduate Admissions Application
- Official, final transcripts from all colleges and universities attended

- If you are a returning BA or MA Educational Studies graduate from Piedmont University, you may reapply within five years as a certification-only student. Prerequisite for admission includes the successful completion of the appropriate GACE state-level content tests for Georgia.
- Applicant must provide a portfolio and a philosophy of teaching for review.
(If you currently hold a professional teacher certification and want to add another certification, you may apply for the Certification Only program with only a BA degree.)
