College can be an exciting experience for students away from home for possibly the first time. Having to make decisions for yourself that could affect the rest of your life is often an adjustment for some college students. At Piedmont University, we offer counseling services to anyone who may need some guidance with those difficult decisions.
Individual counseling is provided in a safe, confidential atmosphere and is available to assist students with emotional, developmental, or psychological concerns related to their academic progress and personal growth. Through individual counseling, group counseling, and referrals to campus and community resources, our Counseling Services staff are committed to supporting students through challenges that may hinder their academic success.
Counseling Services staff provide education, resources, and coping strategies for a variety of topics that are relevant to emotional and social well-being, such as adjustment to college life, stress, depression, anxiety, loneliness, sexuality, perfectionism, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, and other issues that may arise during this stage of a student’s life. Counselors help students develop adaptive ways for dealing with these challenges as well as clarify students’ feelings through self-exploration and discovery.
Counseling appointments are requested through Starfish, where students will be prompted to complete paperwork to assist in determining how Counseling Services staff can help most effectively. As necessary, students are referred to outside professional resources. Counseling Services is located in the Student Success Center at the Demorest Campus and in the Commons building at the Athens Campus. In addition to on campus appointments, telehealth services are available if needed. Counseling Services appointments are available Monday – Thursday during the hours of 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, and Fridays between 8:00 am – 2:00 pm. Counseling Services is closed on university observed holidays.
Piedmont University students also have free, unlimited access to telehealth services through Virtual Care. All enrolled, full-time undergraduate students are eligible. Some benefits of this service include accessing a crisis counselor immediately, making appointments online 24/7, and receiving regular individual sessions with a licensed mental health professional, including evening and weekend appointments.
