Candidates in Piedmont University’s mathematics education program will undertake a balanced and comprehensive course of study based around a liberal arts approach that promotes critical thinking skills. Candidates will focus on teaching fundamentals with 27 hours devoted to earning teaching certification. The education curriculum also includes 15 hours dedicated to an apprenticeship and senior seminar. Candidates must also complete 76-80 hours in mathematics curriculum.
In our Mathematics Education program, mathematics faculty provide deep content expertise, while professional educators bring research-based teaching practices to the forefront. Together, they prepare future teachers to make mathematics accessible, engaging, and meaningful for all learners.
Designed to produce teachers who have more “hands-on” experience, Piedmont’s mathematics education program enables candidates to observe and assist with teaching in 6-12th grade classrooms. Candidates study and reflect upon the knowledge, skills, and dispositions (habits of mind) required for successful teachers-both in their college classes and during fieldwork. This program culminates in a full year Apprentice Teaching experience in area schools.
We provide you with advisors from both our College of Education and our School of Arts & Sciences. Selected for both their teaching skill and experience in high school classrooms, our education advisors model techniques proven to work in high school settings when teaching their college content courses.
Students anticipating a career teaching mathematics in grades 6-12 may pursue either
A) The program beginning in the freshman year leading toward certification at the T-4 level, or B) The Dual-Degree Program, leading to a Master of Arts in teaching secondary mathematics or recommendation for T-5 certification. Students may enter the T-4 program up to the first semester of the junior year. After that, the Dual-Degree Program is the only option.
