Degree Requirements
Our mission is to prepare students to become professional biologists; we do so via three lines of emphasis. The first is a strong foundation of common knowledge that is offered in a core sequence of classes including genetics, microbiology, and evolution. Next, we offer the choice of different concentrations for additional training, either as a generalist with courses from across the discipline (General Biology concentration) or a curriculum focusedon specific areas of interest (Cellular & Molecular Biology or Ecology & Evolutionary Biology). All biology students take nine prerequisite courses. From there, majors may choose from two different concentration that require four different courses each.
Piedmont offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in conducting original research through the Natural Sciences Honors Program. This is where qualified students work on an independent research project under a faculty director. Projects range from field ecology to modern genetics using the latest in molecular techniques.
A Well-Rounded Education Leads to Success
Our science programs embrace a liberal arts education, which develops nimble minds for a fast-changing workplace – or with postgraduate studies. Our biology degree incorporates adventurous thinking with required skills in a wide range of other studies. At Piedmont, you will learna rounded approach to science– so that you can ask the right questions. Combine those distinctions with our wonderful campus atmosphere and extracurricular opportunities, and you can see how Piedmont prepares you for success.
