Piedmont College Presents Arsenic and Old Lace

Feb 4th, 2020

Piedmont College Theatre presents the hilarious classic Arsenic and Old Lace, February 13-16, 2020. The play follows the antics of theatre critic Mortimer Brewster who is engaged to his next-door neighbor Elaine Harper, the daughter of the local minister.

The problem is the Brewster family is anything but religious. Made up of some homicidal aunts, a serial-killer brother, and another brother who believes himself to be Theodore Roosevelt, Mortimer battles handling his “normal” life with the life of his family. As the New York Times said in the opening night review, it is "so funny that none of us will ever forget it."

While written for the theatre in 1939, Arsenic and Old Lace was heavily influenced by films produced during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Director John Spiegel is going to highlight this fact in his production by immersing the audience in the sights, sounds, and fashion of golden age movies.

“Our work on this show focuses on the golden era of Hollywood during which this show was so incredibly popular. The actors will be drawing upon the acting styles and techniques of these films to bring the characters to life. The set designer is creating the classic 1940’s box set. And, the costume designer is laying out period sharp cut costumes.”

Arsenic and Old Lace performances are 7:30 p.m., February 13-15 and 2 p.m., February 16, in the Swanson Center Mainstage Theater. Adult tickets are $10, senior and student tickets are $5, and Piedmont College faculty, staff, and students are free. Tickets can be ordered online at piedmont.edu/fa or by calling the Box Office at 706-778-8500 x1355.
