Mellichamp to perform at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles
Piedmont College President James F. Mellichamp will perform a solo concert at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on January 9. The Los Angeles cathedral features an acclaimed forty-two ton organ that is the 89th largest pipe organ in North America and the 143rd largest in the world.
The massive instrument, custom constructed to accommodate the immense space, includes 6,000 pipes and is supported by a steel structure. Three blowers that total 27 horse power supply the organ with wind pressure. Dr. Mellichamp’s performance will begin at 12:45 p.m. and is part of the cathedral’s weekly organ concert series that attracts top-performing organists.
Originally from Toccoa, Dr. Mellichamp’s concert career spans more than 40 years. He has made appearances as an organist throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe. His concerts include solo recitals at such notable venues as the Washington Cathedral, Berlin Cathedral, the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, and London’s Westminster Abbey.
