The Revolutionists.
The Piedmont University Theatre Department continues the 25-26 Mainstage Season with The Revolutionists, performing Feb. 19-22. This thought-provoking production examines the lives of four formidable women fighting for equality amid the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror.
The Revolutionists imagines a meeting of the minds between four strong-willed, opinionated women of the French Revolution: feminist playwright Olympe de Gouges, soon-to-be assassin Charlotte Corday, the former Queen of France Marie-Antoinette, and Haitian revolutionary Marianne Angelle. The four explore violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and how women go about changing the world.
The Revolutionists will be performed Thurs., Fri., and Sat., Feb. 19-21, at 7:30 P.M. and Sun., Feb. 22, at 2:00 P.M. in the Swanson Center Blackbox Theater in Demorest, GA. This production is recommended for mature audiences due to explicit language.
“Our production of The Revolutionists carves out a space where men’s voices are silenced and women’s voices reign supreme,” says Director Kathy Blandin. “In this female-dominated landscape we explore what feminist poet and essayist Adrienne Rich imagines when she says, ‘The connections between and among women are the most feared, the most problematic, and the most potentially transforming force on the planet.’”
Blandin directs the Piedmont production with junior Ava Kerpics Assistant Directing. Piedmont music major Ananda Muñoz Salas arranges and composes original music for the production and senior Jenna Meinberg Stage manages.
