Dr. Ann Gazell Shares Her Piedmont Journey
This summer, we asked Piedmont faculty to answer a simple prompt: tell a story that matters to you. Today we highlight Dr. Ann Gazell, professor of education and beloved figure on campus. Read on to learn about her journey at Piedmont!
My journey with Piedmont University began in the early 2000s when they started offering graduate courses in local school districts. I proudly graduated in 2005 with an EdS degree and eagerly joined the first EdD program, graduating with that pioneering class in 2011. Fast forward to 2018, I retired from my role as a principal and was immediately welcomed by Dean Gnecco as the Northwest Regional Coordinator for the College of Education. My mission was to recruit for graduate programs, and at one point, I was advising over 400 graduate students!
Now, I’m thrilled to serve as the Chair of the Leadership Department, collaborating with current and aspiring administrators across Georgia. Alongside Graduate Admissions Director, Ashley Clouatre, and Regional Coordinator, Dr. Mark Merges, we established our NW EdD campus in Pickens County. I love my work at Piedmont, especially interacting with our incredible students. It's deeply fulfilling to know that by supporting teachers and administrators, I'm contributing to the quality education of children. I'm grateful Piedmont expanded to Cherokee County—it truly changed my life.
I could not have achieved my life's goals and career milestones without the unwavering support of my incredible family. My parents encouraged me to pursue my educational goals from the time I was able to talk. My mom and dad were so proud to attend my graduation. They are gone now, but I will forever remember the pride on their faces when I was hooded at graduation. My husband, Mike, played a vital role during my EdD journey by driving me to classes. He was my study partner for the written comps, my audience for countless dissertation defense practices, and my rock when I felt like giving up. My kids, bonus kids and grandchildren cheered me on as well. They are supportive as I continue to fulfill my goals and dreams with Piedmont University.
