Turner’s Long Tenure Brings Expertise to Academic Affairs Office

If it happened at Piedmont in the past quarter century, chances are good that interim Vice President of Academic Affairs Vickie Turner was here for it, knows about it, and can offer expert advice on it.

“When I came to Piedmont, enrollment was 330 students. I have seen that enrollment grow to where we are now. There have been many changes, and I am proud to have been a part of those changes.”

In previous roles, Turner served admissions, the registrar’s office, student advising, institutional effectiveness, accreditation, and strategic planning. She was also an advisor to the president.

“Working in these different capacities has given me a broad perspective of the institution and how the various units relate and work together,” Turner said.

Today, Turner oversees the academic programs of the four colleges, ensures curriculum development, and guides faculty hiring and promotion. The Academic Affairs Office also has oversight of the library, the registrar’s office, the Lillian E. Smith Center, and online learning facilitation.

Numerous academic programs have been added during Turner’s long tenure. She was on the teams that launched Piedmont’s graduate programs and opened the satellite campus in Athens. She is happy to have seen Piedmont College become Piedmont University.

One thing has not changed and never will, Turner said.

“I am, and always will be, an advocate for students. Students are the reason why we are here,” Turner said. “I believe in the small college experience and the education it provides.”

Turner is a proud alumna, earning two degrees from Piedmont, including an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and a Master of Public Administration.

Outside Piedmont, Turner’s five grandchildren keep her busy when she isn’t traveling or enjoying the great outdoors.
