Residential Policy

All Piedmont College students must live in the residence halls except the following:

  • Married, divorced, widowed students or students with dependents;
  •   Students living at the primary residence of their parents or legal guardian in Habersham, Banks, Hall, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, or White counties (with the exception of student athletes);
  • Students who are 21 years of age on the first day of registration for the fall term (with the exception of athletes);
  • ALL Piedmont College athletes are required to live on campus.

Any changes in the on-campus living arrangements status must be approved in advance by the Dean of Student Affairs and Admissons.  Students living on campus may not move off campus during the regular academic year, except in cases where there is a change in marital status.  Other exceptions may be allowed in unusual circumstances with the prior approval of the Dean of Student Affairs and Admissions.  Some scholarships require students to live on-campus, and a change in status normally means loss of scholarship.

Because of demand for residence hall space, the College is unable to provide housing for married students or families, or students who turn 25 before the beginning of fall semester.

Residence Hall Options
Getman-Babcock (G-B) Hall, Purcell Hall and Wallace Hall have large rooms with spacious closets and ample storage.  Most rooms are arranged in suites of two rooms with adjoining baths. Swanson Hall and Johnson Hall are set up as apartment type dwellings with two private bedrooms sharing a common bath and living area.  All rooms come with blinds, AC/Heat, cable, internet connection, refrigerators and access to micorwave ovens.  The halls have coin-operated laundry facilities as well.  Getman-Babcock, Wallace and Swanson Halls are currently women's residences.  Purcell and Johnson Hall are currently  mens' residences.  Getman-Babcock is reserved for freshman women and Purcell is reserved for freshman men.  Wallace, Swanson and Johnson Halls are currently reserved for upper-class men and women. Mayflower our newest residence hall is reserved for senior men and women.

Housing Application and Deposit
All new students requesting campus housing must submit a completed Residence Hall Application form to the Admissions Office and have on file with the Business Office the appropriate housing fee. If the room assignment is cancelled any time prior to taking occupancy, the housing fee will be forfeited to the college.

Hall & Room Assignments
Assignments of available spaces are made according to the date when the Residence Hall Application and deposit are received and on the number of credit ours accumulated.  Room assignments are made without regard to race, color, creed or national origin.  All roommate requests must be mutual.  Every attempt will be made to honor roommate requests, but they are not guaranteed.

Current students will be allowed to choose their fall residence hall placement during the Spring Semester.  A $100.00 fee is required, prior to sign up, and will be applied to the Fall housing charges.  If the room assignment is cancelled any time prior to taking occupancy, the housing fee will be forfeited to the college.

Current students with 30 or more earned credit hours may choose to live in one of the upperclassmen residence halls.  Female students may choose to live in Wallace or Swanson Halls, while male students have the option of living in Johnson Hall or having a single room (space permitting) in Purcell Hall.

In the case that a vacancy occurs in a room/suite, the student who remains agrees to accept an assigned roommate or move to another room upon request of the College.  Where there is a vacant space, the room must be maintained by the occupant in a manner that will allow another sutdent to move in immediately.

The College reserves the right to assign students to temporary accommodtions in the event that  regular rooms are not available or manitenance issues develop.  Students who accept a temporary assignment do so with tht understanding that they may be given short notice to relocate.

Residence Hall Supervision
The College employes three Residence Hall Directors that live on campus full time.  The College also employes 11 Resident Assistants within the dorms.   Specific duties include peer counseling, establishment of a community atmosphere, administrative duties, maintenance of the building, rooms and grounds, orientation assistance, communication and enforcement of College rules and regulations, supervision of visitation, connection of residents to available campus and community resources, planning and implementation of social and educational programming, and fulfillment of any other duties as assigned.

Residence Hall Directors are responsible for day-to-day management of the facility, supervising the RAs and student staff, providing programming, minor discipline and counseling, and assessing and meeting the needs of Piedmont's residential students to the best of the College's ability.

Residence Hall Contract
Students who wish to reside in on-campus housing are required to sign a residence hall contract, which is a binding contract between the college and individual student for the academic year, with option for the summer term.    If at any time the student ceases to be enrolled in the College, this contract shall automatically and immediately terminate.  By execution of this contract, the student agrees to pay the College, by semester, the applicable rates for the assigned space in accordance with the Schedules of Housing Charges listed.

Guests and Visitors
Residents are responsible for the conduct of their guests.  Same sex guests / non-students may be allowed to stay overnight only after approval and signing in with the Residence Life Staff.  Members of the opposite sex may not stay in a room past visitation hours.  All visitors are expected to surrender ID in residence halls requiring it.

Housing During Holidays and Between Semesters
Housing is provided during Thanksgiving.  Residents must make other housing arrangements during all other breaks, including Christmas, Spring Break and semester breaks. Food service is not provided during any break.

Janitorial Service
Residents are responsible for the cleanliness of their own rooms.  Trash dumpsters are provided in the parking lots, and trash should be properly disposed of in these dumpsters.  Common areas are maintained by the College.  However, each individual is also responsible for helping to maintain a clean and neat living environment in all common areas.  Periodically, the College will contract for major cleaning projects in the rooms.  Resident cooperation is required if the College is to provide this service.  Students' rooms are expected to be relinquished at the end of the term in the same state of maintenance and cleanliness as they were upon moving in, exclusive of normal wear.

Keys and Locks
Keys are the property of the College and must be surrendered to the Residence Life Staff on termination of residence.  Residents will be financially responsible for any lost room / front door key.  Keys may not be duplicated or utilized by anyone other than thr student they were issued to.  Auxillary locks may not be installed, nor may residents tapber with any existing lock.

Laundry Service
Each residence hall is equipped with coin-operated washers and dryers.  Any difficulty with these machines should be reported to the residence hall staff immediately.

Refrigerators and Microwaves
In Getman-Babcock and Purcell, each room is provided with a mini-refrigerator, and microwave ovens are available on each hallway.  If available, larger refrigerators may be rented from the College.  Wallace, Swanson, Johnson and Mayflower dorms are provided with full-sized refrigerators and microwaves in each room.

Phone Service
Students are provided with local phone service on campus and must bring their own phone from home.  Each dorm room has its own extension number with voicemail and may be reached by dialing (706) 778-8500.  Calling cards and long distance service is the responsibilty of each resident.  Students should keep in mind that long distance codes should be memorized and kept confidential.  Please check with your cell phone provider in making sure that the North Georgia area is covered by your cell plan.

Post Office

The Demorest Post Office is located on Georgia Avenue, within walking distance of the campus.  Resident students should rent a box in order to receive mail.  Student mail is not delivered at the College address.  The Post Office is open from 8-11:30 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m.- noon on Saturdays.  Box rentals start at $17.00 per year and increase depending on the size of the box chosen/available.

ID Card
Every Piedmont student is issued a College student identification (ID) card. A College ID is mandatory to check out library books, work out at Total Fitness and to enter the dining hall if the student has a meal plan. There is no charge for the first ID, but there is a $25 fee for cards that need to be replaced.  Existing student ID’s are validated each semester in the Business Office during registration.

Health Insurance
All residential students and students participating in intercollegiate sports must have health insurance.  Athletes must provide verification of their insurance to the Athletic Trainer prior to the start of each semester.

In the event of an accident, either on campus property or during off-campus, school-related, academic or sports activities, students are covered by a general liability insurance plan.  College liability insurance will not cover any costs incurred as a result of illness or as a result of accidents, which do not occur on campus or at a College sponsored event.

Insurance may be purchased through a private broker of the student's choosing or contact Metro Atlanta Financial Group to inquire about an inexpensive policy with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia.  You can call them at 1-888-208-6234 or visit their website at  "http://www.benefit-plan.com/studenthealthinsurance" .

Personal Property Insurance
Personal property insurance for residence hall students is strongly recommended but not required by the College.  Riders may be offered by your homeowner's or renters insurance company.  Students who do not have personal property insurance may wish to contact a local insurance agency and inquire about renter's insurance.  These plans are often inexpensive, depending upon the value of the items students bring to campus, i.e., AV equipment, computers, jewelry, clothing, etc.
