College
can be an exciting time for people being away from home for
possibly the first time. And, having to make decisions for
yourself that could affect the rest of your life can be scary
for some. At Piedmont we offer counseling and career services
to anyone who may need some guidance with those difficult
decisions.
Personal counseling
is not advice giving or having someone make decisions for
you. It is someone to talk through concerns or problems with
and to help YOU make the best decisions possible. A counselor
does not judge you, but helps to guide you through issues
concerning depression, anxiety, social skill problems, relationship
problems, stress, eating problems, and anything else that
you may be having problems with.
Career counseling
helps you to make important decisions regarding your career
path. Again, the counselor does NOT make those decisions for
you, but gives you the skills and resources to make the best
decision for yourself. The counselor works closely with the
faculty to ensure that you receive the most accurate and up-to-date
information.
In most cases
there is not a “magical solution." If there were, you
would have already found it. But, counseling can help you find
effective coping skills to handle a problem or situation.
It also gives you the chance to have someone listen to you
and offer support in a non-judgmental way.
Each counseling
session is confidential. That means the counselor will not
gossip about you with faculty, staff or your peers. Confidentiality
is broken in cases that could result in harm to yourself or
someone else. Your safety is the college’s #1 priority.
