Political Science at Piedmont College is the critical study of political theories and ideas, classical and modern, including the ideas that have shaped U.S. governmental institutions and processes. It includes the study of the processes, structures, and institutions of U.S. government, including international or global relations. Furthermore, the major in political science fosters ethical conduct, social responsibility, and democratic citizenship. 

The political science program has established the following educational objectives for its graduates. Graduates will have the ability to:

  • acquire knowledge of political theories and ideas and how they related to political processes and structures 

  •  
  • acquire knowledge and understanding of the U.S. Constitution 

  •  
  • articulate the relationships between the various branches and levels of government as they relate to the U.S. Constitution 

  •  
  • articulate the processes, structures, and institutions at all levels of government (federal, state, and local) 

  •  
  • place the processes, structures, and institutions of government within a global context 

  •  
  • acquire liberal arts ability cluster skills

LaVerne Williamson-Hill
Associate Professor of Public Administration and Political Science, 
B.A., M.A., Ph.D., University of Georgia 

Dr. Hill's particular areas of interest are public policy, the courts and criminal justice, and family violence.  She has worked for the U.S. Senate, the Georgia State Senate, and is a former Governor's Teaching Fellow.  She is a trained and certified mediator. 


CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Possible career options include working in local, state and federal government agencies, regional planning agencies, social services agencies and becoming a professional political scientist by completing graduate work in political science.
