Educators and education students in northeast Georgia are invited to attend a one-day conference March 15 at Piedmont College in Demorest that will focus on timely issues and trends in education.

The Piedmont Educator Renewal Conference (PERC) will allow educators to share information on innovative and effective practices and recent research in education, said Dr. Don Gnecco, Dean of the Piedmont College School of Education.

The conference will also focus on the national Common Core State Standards Initiative. Established by the National Governor's Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, the first Common Core Standards in mathematics and English were released in 2010. The standards are designed to provide parents and educators a clear understanding of academic goals for grades kindergarten through high school.

The conference will include workshops, and breakout sessions, with a focus on embedding Imagination and Creativity when teaching the Common Core Standards (CCS) as well as information about motivating students, technology in the classroom, embedding creativity, the Foxfire approach to teaching, and supporting culturally diverse populations.

"This is our second annual PERC event, and it has proved to be a good way for educators in the area to pool information," Gnecco said. "Sessions will be conducted by Piedmont faculty and recent graduates from our master's, specialist, and doctoral programs, as well as our partners in education who will share information that they have collected through their capstone, dissertation research, and implementing the CCS. "But we don't want this to be a dry, academic event. Presentations will be timely and practical. The conference will include entertainment and exhibits from our students and the students they teach."

The cost of the conference is $40 for teachers, who can earn one Professional Learning Unit; and $20 for students. Education students can use attendance at the conference as field experience. Conference registration includes lunch and snacks. Conference registration begins 8 a.m. at the Swanson Center. The day will conclude at approximately 3:30 p.m. For more information, including how to register, contact Dr. Judith Perry at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
