The winter sports season kicked off in the Cave Arena at the Johnny Mize Athletic Center with a "Madness at the Mize" party Nov. 13.

Organized by the undergraduate business department, the student section was filled with the "loudest and proudest" supporters of the Lion and Lady Lion basketball programs.

The night's lineup includes the introduction of the 2013-14 Piedmont basketball teams and cheerleaders, a 5-on-5 basketball game which included several senior celebrity guests, a slam dunk competition, and a variety of contests for the fans.

Both the head coaches of the Piedmont basketball programs were in attendance, as first-year head coach Greg Neeley of the Lions and veteran leader head coach Jamie Purdy of the Lady Lions shared a few words with the crowd at the Cave. Neeley is coming off a USCAA National Championship run at his last post before taking over the Lions this past spring, a spot where he got his start in college coaching. Purdy is aimed at another postseason berth as well, as the long-time Lady Lion coach and Piedmont Hall of Famer has a trio of NCAA Championship appearances to her name and is looking to add a fourth in 2013-14.
