Piedmont Opera Workshop

Piedmont to present three comic operas Nov. 4

At right: Jennifer Babel and Brandon Nonnemaker square off in a battle of wills in Mozart's "The Impresario," one of three comic operas to be performed by Piedmont College music students at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 4 at the college in Demorest.

If you missed last year's "Amahl and the Night Visitors," you won't want to miss the upcoming Piedmont College Opera Workshop presentation of three comic operas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Sebastion Bach.

The performances will include two works by Mozart, "Bastien and Bastienne" and "The Impressario," along with Bach's "The Coffee Cantata." The "opera buffa" is free and open to the public and will be held in Brooks Hall in the Center for Worship and Music at Piedmont's campus in Demorest at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 4.

Directed by Tommy Jameson with accompanist Donna James on piano and harpsichord, the performances will also include Heather Strachan, first violin; Kathy Wallace, second violin; Edie Benson, viola; Mary Alice Swope, cello; and Joy Hayner, organ.

"Bastien and Bastienne," about a young shepherd and shepherdess whose love affair is assisted by a friendly magician, features Piedmont music students Emily Giardina as Bastienne, Charron Davis as Bastien, and Haley Jordan as Colas.

In "The Coffee Cantata," a young lady in 17th century Germany is madly in love—with coffee. Her father agrees to find her a husband if she will swear off the new drink. She agrees, but on the sly lets it be known that no man need apply unless he allows her to drink her coffee. The singers include Jeff Akana, Jeremy Bishop, and Laurel Mullinax as Lizzie.

"The Impresario" features Daniel Burns, Paul Meier, Brandon Nonnemaker, Sarah Jean Miller, and Jennifer Babel. Set behind the scenes of an opera theater, Mozarts tale pits two prima donna's against each other for the main role just as the old impresario, or producer, tries to leave show business.
