Piedmont sets summer sports camps

(5-5-05) The Piedmont College Athletic Department is offering camps for basketball, volleyball, soccer, and baseball this summer

Basketball camps will be held May 31-June 3 for boys and girls ages 8-17. There will be a morning camp from 9 a.m.-noon for boys and an afternoon camp from 1-4 p.m. for girls. Taught by Piedmont head basketball coach Lee Glenn and current and former Piedmont varsity players, the camps will promote the fundamental skills of basketball along with offensive and defensive concepts. Volleyball day camps for girls and boys will be held June 6-9. A morning camp for ages 12-18 will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, and an afternoon camp for ages 8-12 will held from 2-5 p.m. The cost of the camp is $80 per person, or $75 if registered before May 31.

Taught by Piedmont head volleyball coach Katie O'Brien, assistant coach Clarice Laires, and members of the Piedmont varsity volleyball team, the camp will cover the offensive and defensive concepts serving, setting, passing, receiving and blocking. The baseball camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, May 31-June3, for ages 9-12. The cost is $75. Piedmont head coach Jim Peeples and assistant coaches Richard Dombrosky and Justin Scali, along with current varsity players, will teach the basic skills of hitting and bunting, fielding, throwing, catching, pitching and base running. Soccer day and overnight camps will be held June 20-24 (overnight campers will report June 19). The camps are for boys and girls ages 7-17, and campers can enroll in the day camp (9 a.m. to 5 p.m., $125), an evening camp (6 p.m. to 9 p.m., $75) or the overnight camp from 6 p.m., June 19, to 6 p.m, June 24, $395. There will be a special mini-camp for boys and girls ages 5-6 from 9-11:30 a.m. daily, for $60.

Taught by Piedmont head coach Jason Smith and Emmanuel College coach Jimmy Stephens, the camp will also feature instruction from Lloyd White, former professional soccer player from Milwal, England, as well as current varsity Piedmont players.  The camp coaches will provide age and ability specific training sessions including detailed technical and tactical progressions. In addition to gaining an increased understanding of the different phases of play, each camper will experience a development in coordination,
