Organist Jensen to perform at Piedmont March 19(3-2-04) Wilma Jensen, the "Dean of American Organists," will present a concert of music in the French tradition from the 19th and 20th centuries March 19 at Piedmont College. The concert, featuring the 3,675-pipe Sewell organ, will be held at 7:30 p.m., in the Center for Worship and Music at Piedmont's main campus in Demorest. Admission is free and everyone is invited. An extensive career as a concert organist has taken Jensen throughout the U.S. and around the world, including tours of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, West Germany, France, Poland and England. Recognized as a successful teacher, Jensen has taught at Oklahoma City University, the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt, and Indiana University. Dr. James Mellichamp, vice president for academic affairs at Piedmont and a former student of Jensen's, said "For nearly 30 years it's been my pleasure to hear Wilma Jensen in concert. On every occasion, whether in the largest cathedral or smallest parish church, I've been awed by her artistry. She has a special gift for registration, which coupled with her prodigious technique allows her to create exciting and compelling performances." Jensen is the choirmaster/organist emerita at St. George's Episcopal Church in Nashville, Tenn., where she served as choirmaster/organist for 19 years. She has made two professional compact disc recordings, "Mors et Resurrectio" on the Arkay label, and "Sketches and Improvisations in the French Tradition" on the Pro Organo label. Both were recorded at St. George's Episcopal Church. For the Piedmont concert, Jensen will perform a variety of works by Belgian, French and American composers including Cesar Franck, Philip James, Alexander Russell, Louis Vierne, Pierre Cochereau, Charles-Marie Widor, Joseph Bonnet and Charles Tournemire from the late 1800s to the mid 1900s. -30- |
