GraduatePiedmont to hold summer graduation July 22

Piedmont College will hold its summer commencement ceremonies beginning at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 22, at the Johnny Mize Athletic Center in Demorest. Registrar Linda Wofford said some 328 students will earn degrees at the end of the summer semester. These include 42 students earning undergraduate degrees, 130 students earning master's degrees, and 156 students earning the education specialist degree.

The commencement speaker will be noted Georgia politician and businessman Bert Lance. Originally from Gainesville, Lance grew up in Young Harris, where his father was president of Young Harris College. Lance served as president and chief executive officer of the Calhoun National Bank, Commissioner of Georgia's Department of Transportation, and president of the National Bank of Georgia. One of Jimmy Carter's close advisors during the 1976 presidential campaign, Lance was appointed by Carter as director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. He has served as chairman of the Reinhardt College Board of Trustees and currently serves as a trustee of Young Harris College.
