Piedmont nursing school gains national accreditation(12/15/03) The Piedmont College Daniel School of Nursing in northeast Georgia has earned accreditation from the National League of Nursing (NLN), a step that will aid student nurses who seek to serve in the military or continue their education in graduate school.Nursing school Dean Dr. Barbara Crosson said the accreditation process involved a four-month self-study period that ended last November. Members of the NLN Accreditation Commission visited the School of Nursing this year to analyze every aspect of the nursing program. "The site visitors conducted an in-depth study," Crosson said. "They interviewed the agencies where our students gain clinical experiences, and they interviewed our students, recent graduates, faculty and administrators." The school of nursing, which graduated its third class in May, has already received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and from the Georgia Board of Nursing. Crosson said the NLN accreditation is especially important because graduation from a nationally accredited school is required by most graduate programs if students plan to earn a master's degree or doctorate in nursing. "Nurses applying for officers' training in the military must also have graduated from a nationally accredited school," she said. Piedmont's Daniel School of Nursing, located on the college's main campus in Demorest, offers the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree. In the three years since the college's first nursing class graduated, the school has had an above-average passing rate for students taking the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), with more than 96 percent of Piedmont students passing the test. -30- |
