Hinson named director of music for
Covenant Congregational Church
Dr. Wallace Hinson, associate professor of music and chair of the music department
at Piedmont College, has been named director of music for Covenant Congregational
Church in Demorest, beginning Jan. 1, 2004.
Hinson, who will continue his position at Piedmont, said his new duties will
include planning and providing music for services and conducting the new
choir. “One of my first goals will be to quickly develop a high-quality,
medium-size choir for the church to enhance the worship experience of the
congregation,” Hinson said. “My long-range goals include having the finest
church choir in the region that will provide music for services as well as
annual concerts of sacred music.”
The choir will provide a variety of music that is interesting and musically
and spiritually challenging for both the musicians and the congregation,
Hinson said. “It should be a part of the whole worship experience—a means
to an end, and not an end in itself,” he said. “I will be working closely
with Rev. Ashley Cook, minister of Covenant Congregational Church, and Joy
Hayner, church organist, to provide the best possible worship experience
for everyone in the church through the presentation of music from the classical
tradition as well as more contemporary selections.”
“Dr. Hinson’s direction of the choir will help us emphasize the teaching
and learning aspect of Covenant Congregational Church,” the Rev. Cook said.
“It will also provide a greater opportunity for church members from the community
to interact with students here on campus.”
Hinson said rehearsals for the choir, which is open to anyone high school
age or older, will begin at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, in Brooks Hall,
located in the Piedmont College Center for Worship and Music. Services for
Covenant Congregational Church are held on Sunday mornings at 11 a.m. For
more information regarding the church or choir, please call Dr. Hinson at
