Music celebration brings together singers
from variety of northeast Georgia churches

The Alliance for African American Music in Habersham County will host its 15th annual "Celebration of Music" at 3 p.m., Feb. 26, at the Piedmont College Center for Worship and Music in Demorest.

This year's event, entitled "Many Voices -- A Harmony of Faiths," will be a multicultural celebration reflecting the growing diversity of Habersham County in Northeast Georgia. The program features Mariachi Jalisco, Sounds of Joy Hispanic Choir from Cornelia United Methodist Church, the Shady Grove Baptist Church Praise Singers and Youth Praise Dancers, an African American choir conducted by Elder Vanessa Burns of Shady Grove Baptist Church, an Anglo choir conducted by Bill Loyd of Cornelia United Methodist Church, the Bluegrass Gospel group from Cornelia Christian Church, a Southern Gospel Quartet, and soloist Patrick Anderson of Piedmont College.

The Alliance for African-American Music in Habersham County was established to present music events that bring together people from different backgrounds. The alliance is an outgrowth of the first African American music celebration produced through the efforts of Rev. Julian Lachicotte, Mrs. Miriam Thacker, and Rev. Terry McCreary in February 1990. Currently chaired by Piedmont College professor Dr. Barbara Steinhaus-Jordan, the alliance represents a variety of organizations and religious institutions of Habersham County and sponsors a musical celebration during Black History Month each year.

Admission to the celebration is free, and a "love offering" will be taken to help further the work of the alliance, including the Lachicotte-Strickland Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded jointly with Piedmont College to minority students majoring in music. This year's scholarship recipient Patrick Anderson will perform during the Feb. 26 celebration.
