Family of late coach Charles Cooper establishes memorial scholarship The family of the late Piedmont College women's basketball coach Charles Cooper has created an endowed scholarship fund in his honor. The fund, established by Cooper's widow, Jean Cooper, will "honor the life and achievements of coach Cooper and help carry on his work of aiding women who desire to attend college." Coach Cooper, who led the Lady Lions basketball team for seven seasons, died June 13, 2005. He had previously been a long-time coach at Valdosta State University and at Lowndes County High School The memorial fund provides for a $1,000 scholarship to be awarded each year to a female student who is a rising junior or senior residential student at Piedmont and who demonstrates leadership through involvement in student activities, outstanding personal character, and demonstrated financial need. An additional gift to the college scholarship fund was given in the name of Cooper's children, Deborah Poe, Kathy Bonner, Lisa Lee and Chuck Cooper. For information on how to make contributions to the Cooper Scholarship, contact Piedmont director of development Nancy Singer at (706) 778-3000 or e-mail nsinger@piedmont.edu. -30- |
