8-23-04 Community School offers music and voice lessons for all ages Private lessons and classes in music and voice for children and adults will begin Sept. 7 at the Community School of Music in Demorest. This year, the school will offer pipe organ lessons as well as instruction in piano, guitar and voice at beginner and advanced levels. Founded in 1999, the Community School of Music is a non-profit community arts school for residents of the northeast Georgia area and is offered through the Piedmont College Department of Music. New director Melinda McClenahan said the school this year will offer piano and guitar lessons for ages 7 and up, and voice lessons for ages 12 and up. Students enrolled for organ lessons on Piedmont's new Sewell Pipe Organ should have five years of piano lessons or may enroll by audition. While the piano, guitar and voice lessons are open to everyone at all ability levels, McClenahan said students with some training or who are particularly talented have the option to audition for more advanced instruction. The piano, voice, and organ classes will meet for 12 half-hour private lessons and four one-hour group "master classes" at a cost of $180 for the semester. Students over age 10 can opt for 12 one-hour private lessons and the master classes for $360 per semester. The guitar class will meet for 12 one-hour group lessons and four master classes. The price for guitar lessons is $100. McClenahan said the music lessons will be taught by professionally trained musicians enrolled at Piedmont College. Members of the Piedmont music faculty will teach the master classes. The semester will conclude Dec. 10 with a holiday recital in the Piedmont Center for Worship and Music. Enrollment in the Community School is limited, and McClenahan said interested students or their parents and area music teachers wishing to expand their music programs should contact her at the college at (706) 778-8500 extension 1356 or by e-mail at burtontree@alltel.net. Early registration discounts are offered. "I'm very excited to serve as director this year," McClenahan said. "I think this school is a fantastic way for children, adults and teachers of our community to take advantage of the talent and the facilities available at Piedmont College." -30- |
