Piedmont College Theater Department is wrapping up its 2006-2007 season with a children’s theater production of "East of the Sun & West of the Moon." This production is very special to the department as it is directed by senior theater major Danielle Bailey Miller and is produced by Alpha Psi Omega, Beta Chapter, of the National Theatre Honor Society. "East of the Sun & West of the Moon" will be performed at Jenkins Theater in Daniel Hall on the Piedmont College Demorest campus. Show dates are April 18-21, with evening performances at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m., April 22. "This is a classic fairy tale written by Asbjorsen and Moe (famous for Three Billy Goats Gruff) in 1837 and adapted for the stage by Claudia Ferguson," Miller said. Audience members of all ages will enjoy the story of Lara’s journey to find the prince she loves. However, a fairy tale is not a fairy tale without interesting encounters. Such an encounter is Lara’s journey into the Troll Kingdom. "One of the major images I am working with is a history book exploding on the stage," says Miller. "This is accomplished by bringing a 'Medieval punk-style' to the trolls, a sense of the Native American heritage to the White Bear and a feel of the 'commonplace' to the family." Miller is not only the director for the production but also serves as president for Alpha Psi Omega, the producing agent of the show. She is known and respected throughout the department as an incredibly talented actress, and her faculty advisors are sure this will translate well to the role of the director. "Danielle is one of the most driven, creative and organized people I have ever encountered," said assistant theatre professor Bill Gabelhausen. "We are incredibly excited that our final production is in the hands of such a capable and creative theater professional."
