Piedmont holds commencement activities (Undergraduate Commencement Photos) (Graduate Commencement Photos) Piedmont College held commencement week activities for 537 new graduates beginning on Sunday, April 30, with a baccalaureate service in the Center for Worship and Music in Demorest. Martin B. Copenhaver, senior pastor of Wellesley Congregational Church in Wellesley, Mass., delivered the baccalaureate address. Copenhaver is a graduate of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Penn., and received his master of divinity degree from Yale Divinity School in 1980. On Saturday, May 6, the college held graduation ceremonies for 244 undergraduates at 10 a.m., followed by a separate ceremony at 2 p.m. for 293 students receiving master's and specialist degrees. Both ceremonies were held in the Johnny Mize Athletic Center on the Piedmont campus in Demorest. The commencement speakers included Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears at the 10 a.m. ceremony, and Dr. Michael Mescon, dean emeritus of the Georgia State University School of Business at 2 p.m. Justice Sears has served on the Georgia Supreme Court since 1992 and last year was elected by the court to become the first African-American woman to serve as a state chief justice in the U.S. In addition to teaching at Georgia State, Mescon is the author of several standard textbooks on business and was instrumental in the creation of Technology Park Atlanta. He is also the founder of The Mescon Group, an influential business consulting firm. -30-
