Piedmont Chamber Singers set Spring Concert

(4-20-05) The Piedmont College Chamber Singers will present their Spring Concert April 29 in Demorest before leaving on a four-day tour of concerts in Illinois. The free concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the college's Center for Worship and Music.

The Chamber Singers, directed by Dr. Wallace Hinson, is a 34-voice select choir made up of Piedmont students. For the Spring Concert, the Chamber Singers will perform choral works from the 18th to the 20th century by Eric Whitacre, Daniel Gawthorpe, Hugo Distler and Mozart. The Singers will also perform traditional spirituals, including "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel" arranged by William Lawson.

The accompanists will be Louise Bass, formerly assistant organist and choir director at the Cathedral of St. John in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and on piano, Dr. Phillip Hayner, professor of music at Piedmont.

Following their Demorest performance, the Chamber Singers will travel to Illinois for a series of concerts May 8-11, including a performance at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, one of the oldest congregations in Chicago.
