Darlene Wyant won best senior capstone award for a film she wrote, produced, directed and scored entitled Reflection of Truth

The "capstone" course (MCOM 400) is required for all majors in Mass Communciations. The Advanced Studies in Mass Media Course(MCOM 400) is only offered in the spring semester.

If a student plans to graduate in the summer or fall semester, he or she must take the course the previous spring semester.

Catalog Description    

MCOM 400. Advanced Studies in Mass Media

  • 3 Hours
  • Prerequisite: Senior Standing

A seminar designed to synthesize and integrate many of the theoretical and practical approaches to the study of mass media, giving the opportunity through a variable topics seminar to analyze processes and effects of mass media and to acquire specialized knowledge of specific mass media techniques and practices.

Evaluation Criteria    

Students are evaluated using a point system with clearly defined categories and subcategories that will enhance the consistency of grading and lead to more detailed and relevant feedback.


Senior Capstone Evaluation Form Category Descriptions:

I. Presentation:

Public Speaking Skills

  • Makes/maintains eye contact
  • Speaks loudly and clearly
  • Avoids distracting sounds and movements
  • Displays confident manner

Organization of Material

  • Displays visual material attractively and visibly
  • Distributes handouts without detracting from presentation
  • Refers to materials to illustrate presentation

Creativity

  • Presents original idea or idea in original way
  • Uses art, photography or graphics to illustrate presentation
  • Written documentation includes details and descriptions

Technical Expertise

  • Incorporates 5 different technologies into presentation
  • All aspects of presentation ready and working (i.e. tapes cued, computer programs running, batteries charged, etc.)
  • Student demonstrates evidence of having rehearsed with all pieces of equipment and with any assistants, if applicable

Knowledge of Content Area

  • Examines subject matter in broader context of the field of study
  • Examines subject matter in-depth, including pertinent details and examples
  • Discusses recent developments in the field
  • Student is able to answer professors’ questions with competency
  • Treatment is accurate and thorough


II. Written Documentation

Writing Skills

  • Grammatically proficient
  • Conclusions supported by facts
  • Facts are accurate and documented
  • Language is clear, concise and professional

Organization of Material

  • Introduction clearly states topic and purpose
  • Sentences and paragraphs proceed in a logical manner
  • Graphics and/or illustrations enhance written document
  • Conclusion is supported by document and summarizes premise

Creativity

  • Presents original idea or idea in original way
  • Uses illustrations or graphics in an interesting way
  • Includes details, descriptions and examples to support statements

Technical Expertise

  • Document is neat and professional in appearance
  • Graphics and/or illustrations are sophisticated
  • MLA documentation is accurate and thorough

Knowledge of Content Area

  • Examines subject matter in broader context of the field of study
  • Examines subject matter in-depth, including pertinent details and examples
  • Discusses recent developments in the field
  • Anticipates professors’ questions
  • Treatment is accurate and thorough

Students are given comments by the instructors after completion of the presentation of the capstone and written evaluations within one week of completing both the presentation and written portions of the capstone.
