Swanson Center for Performing Arts and Communications

| The $14 million Swanson Center was completed in 2007 and houses the mass communications and theatre departments. The center contains state-of-the-art facilities in television, radio, graphic design and print journalism as well as a 350-seat mainstage theatre and blackbox performance space. |

| Atrium |

The spectacular atrium in the Swanson Center is busy all day long and into the evening with students who partcipate in both mass communications and theater activities. The annual awards ceremony held by the mass communications department is also held here. Students receive special recognition for their work throughout the year. All students pass through the atrium on their way to classes each day. |

| Newsroom |
| Designed by the same architects who designed the international newsroom at CNN, the mass communications newsroom serves as the hub of the department. Students who have leadership positions in the department each have their own desk and computer. Many different areas are represented in the newsroom including: newspaper, magazine, yearbook, radio, television, web design, debate team, film and Georgia Public Broadcasting liaison. |

| Cox Lab |

The Cox Lab is named for Jim Cox, Jr., former head of Cox Communications. The Piedmont mass communications department is fortunate to recieve a yearly grant from the Jim Cox, Jr. Foundation, established by his wife Betty Holland in honor of her late husband. The mass communications department oversees the Cox CommunityJournalism project established to strengthen community journalism throughout the region and the United States. |

| Lounge Areas |
| Throughout the building are lounge areas where students can take a break while waiting for classes. Often, students use these areas as meeting points for study group, club meetings or informal chats. A kitchen is also provided for students. |

| Television Control Room |

|
The state-of-the-art control room is where the "magic" happens for television productions. Students use this room to direct and produce their television shows for broadcast on TV Piedmont and for the local community network, Alltel Cable Channel 4. |

| Television Studio |
| The television studio overlooks the newsroom and contains several sets as well as a greenscreen for special effects and weather-casting. Students produce news and other programming in the studio and access our direct link to CNN Newsource to obtain CNN feeds of national and international news. |

| Mac Lab |
 |
|
The new Mac Lab includes more than 20 new SuperMac computers and four printers as well as light boards and drafting tables. The computers are loaded with the latest editions of Adobe Creative Suite and Final Cut Pro editing software. |

| WRFP - Student Radio Station |
| WRFP is the student-run radio station for Piedmont College. Students from mass communications and other majors on campus including freshmen create their own radio shows and choose thier own music. The radio station webcasts online at www.piedmont.edu/wrfp/ |

| Screening Room |
 |
|
The 85-seat screening room houses all public speaking classes on campus. It is also the location for our nationally competitive debate team and is the location for film festivals and senior capstone presentations. The room is equipped with Dolby Surround Sound and ta movie theater style projector. |

| GPB Radio 88.3FM |
| Georgia Public Broadcast's 88.3FM radio station broadcasts live from the Swanson Center. Having the station in the mass communications department allows students to learn directly about public radio without leaving the Piedmont campus. |

| Technology Office |
 |
|
The Technology Office houses all equipment for student checkout including Cannon XL1 video cameras, professional radio equipment, microphones, lights, laptops and additional technology. Students at all levels, including freshmen, are allowed to check out is equipment which is recorded in a database tracking system. |

| Mainstage Theatre |
| Mass Communications students are able to utilize camera drops in the 350-seat mainstage theater and record performances live. In addition, mass communications students work on lights and sound for the theater department. |

| Blackbox Theatre |
 |
|
The Blackbox Theatre in the Swanson Center provides a space where the audience is nearly part of the production. Avante Garde productions and student-directed shows are filmed by the mass communications department. |
