"Graphic design is a very popular area of study that is becoming more popular every year," says Betsey Blakeslee, department chair in mass communications. "Graphic design doesn't stand alone as a product of art because it is produced for corporations, making it a growing trend to mass communications."
Briles Lever, professor of graphic design, is overseeing the project.
Lever says that not many classes are being offered this semester because he wants to ensure that all equipment functions properly.
However, once the computers are up and running, they'll support editing work with programs including Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator. This will enable multiple classes to use the lab for graphic design, TV and video editing.
"By implementing this new Mac lab, Piedmont is maximizing its product and technologies," says Blakeslee. "We are excited to have other departments in the Swanson Center."
Graphic design major Tiffany Scott says, "The new lab is beautiful. It's going to be a great opportunity to be able to use the new programs to better my knowledge."
Scott also says that the one drawback will be that the new lab is farther from the rest of her classes with the new location in the Swanson Center.
The lab will be used this semester once it's up and running in a few weeks. However, Lever says most students will still have to take the prerequisite art class before they can begin work on the new computers.
