Bandwidth Regulations

Due to the recent problems concerning the speed of Internet access in the dorms, the Department of Information Technology has placed regulations on all non-academic use of the dorm Internet access.

Effective immediately, students are not allowed to use illegal peer-to-peer software (limewire, kazaa, bearshare, gnutella etc…). If you are found to have these programs on your computer, your connection will be terminated until they are removed.

Legal P2P software such as iTunes, will be tolerated on the condition that downloading is kept to a minimum. Students will not download movies, TV episodes or otherwise large files. This includes pornographic material.

If you must download a large file for a class, research or other academic purposes, contact us at ext. 1452 and we will make arrangements.

Consequences

Students in violation are subject to the following:

First Offence » Student will be warned
Second Offence » Internet access will be terminated for two weeks
Third Offence » Internet access will be terminated for the remainder of the semester.

Computer Identification

Students must rename their computers to match their names. For example, John Smith must name his computer JohnSmith or John-Smith. This is to allow us to identify computers that may be causing problems in order to keep the dorms online as much as possible.

Any student who does not do this will lose his or her internet access until he or she changes it and contacts the IT Department. Please change it using the following instructions. If you are experiencing trouble doing so, please call the IT Dept at ext. 1452 to get help.

Students must change their computer names to match their own before the following dates.

Mayflower Hall » Friday 22nd September 2006
Purcell Hall » Friday 13th October 2006
Johnson Hall » TBA
Swanson Hall » TBA
Wallace Hall » TBA
Getman-Babcock Hall » TBA
