Mass Communications Experience, November 6, 2009—Come explore exciting possibilities for your future in journalism and mass communications. Sessions will examine the great programs and top-notch facilities that Piedmont offers in the following major areas of Mass Communications:
• Television: Professor Jennifer Cathey Arbitter, former news director for CBS Affiliate, Channel 32, will describe what it’s like to work in today’s fast-paced and dynamic television news environment. Students will learn what employers are looking for when they hire applicants for the positions of news anchor, producer, director, camera work and editing.
• Public speaking and Debate: Under the leadership of Dr. Janice Moss, the Piedmont Debate Team competes every year in state and national tournaments across the country. Students are encouraged to enroll in the Debate Practicum course offered each semester to learn the fundamentals of debate and argumentation.
• Radio: Dr. Dale Van Cantfort, former president of the Georgia Association of Broadcasters and fellow with the International Radio and Television Society will take students on a tour of the student radio station. He will discuss what students learn in order to DJ their own radio programs and will present information on internships students should consider in Atlanta-area radio stations.
• Journalism: Professor Stacy Simon, former Executive Editor of CNN Headline News, will discuss all the written formats required by today’s media companies including writing for news and entertainment television, writing for newspapers and magazines, advertising and public relations, copy editing, and writing for the web.
