A concert celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Sewell Pipe Organ at Piedmont College will feature Canadian organist Isabelle Demers at 4 p.m., Sunday, April 14, in the Center for Worship and Music in Demorest.
Also on hand will be Canadian Government Consul General Stephen Brereton and Simon Couture, vice president of Casavant Frères, the Quebec company that built the Sewell Organ.
Demers is head of the organ program at Baylor University in Texas, where she teaches organ and courses in the organ curriculum. A native of Quebec, she is recognized as one of North America's most virtuosic organists. Her concert at the 2010 national convention of the American Guild of Organists in Washington, D.C., was hailed by critics as "one of the most outstanding events of the convention" and by the standing-room-only audience, which called her back five times.
A prize-winner and finalist in several international performance competitions, Demers performs widely in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Highlights of her 2012 season included her Davies Hall and Disney Hall debuts in March 2012, as well as a 14-concert tour of England and Germany. For the Piedmont concert, she will include works by Ernest MacMillan, Gerald Bales, and Rachel Laurin.
The Sewell Organ was constructed by Casavant Frères of Ste. Hyacinthe, Quebec, one of the world's premier builders of pipe organs. The inaugural recital was performed Feb. 7, 2003, by Piedmont professor of music, now President James F. Mellichamp. The organ is named in honor of Piedmont alumnus and former trustee Charles K. Sewell and was designed by Dr. Mellichamp, in collaboration with members of the Casavant staff. Since its installation, the organ has been featured annually in concerts by Piedmont College faculty members, students, and a host of international concert organists.
