Blithe Spirit, the third show of the Piedmont College 2013-2014 season, is a supernatural comic classic. After a "spirited" séance goes decidedly wrong, the cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine suddenly finds himself face to face with the ghost of his deceased wife, Elvira...much to the chagrin of his current spouse, Ruth. Love and marriage devolve into laughter and mayhem when Ruth is accidentally killed and united with Elvira on the "other side." Together the paranormal pair of blithe spirits haunt their hapless husband with hilarious consequences.

Blithe Spirit was presented Feb. 13–15, 2014, in the Mainstage Theatre of  the Swanson Center for Performing Arts and Communications.

Noel Coward's play was first performed in London in 1941 and has been a staple of regional and university theatres ever since. For this production, director John Spiegel has updated the time period of the play to the present and moved the action to New England.  "The message of Blithe Spirit is timeless, but to make the play's action more accessible to today's audience we updated a few of the details so we can all find ourselves within Noel Coward's classic," explains Spiegel. Despite these minor changes, this play has all of Coward's best loved conventions: scorned women, haunting ghosts, eccentric characters, and a hero stepping out of the comedy at the end. Expect magic, mystery and laughter.
