'Morningstar' to premier at Piedmont Swanson Center April 20

"Morningstar," a new musical by Piedmont College professor Dr. Phillip Hayner, will have its world premier at the Swanson Center Mainstage Theater in Demorest.

The musical, which examines the role of evil in Biblical accounts of Satan, is directed by Piedmont senior Allison Criswell of Hoschton as her capstone presentation for a bachelor of arts degree in Musical Theater.

The performance is scheduled for 5 p.m., April 20, in the Swanson Center, located at 365 College Drive, Demorest. Admission is free.

Dr. Hayner, who wrote the piece over a 15–year period from 1998-2013, said "Morningstar" is a musical theater piece in five movements featuring the biblical character of Satan. "It presents three dialogues—between Satan, Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden; between Satan and God concerning Job; and between Satan and Jesus in the wilderness," he said. "These three conversations are framed by two biblical passages set for Greek chorus.  The subtext of the piece is the existence and character of evil."

Dr. Wallace Hinson will conduct the cast of 10 singers and orchestra. Singers include Chris Sudderth, Kelly Hood, Ian Vencil, John Wright, Kate Berardi, Greg Voyles, Elizabeth Parmer, Jennifer Pitt, ErikaJade Carr, and Katie O'Neill. The orchestra will include Jessie Bee, flute; Mitchell Auger, saxophone; Heather Strachan, violin; Kallan Williams, guitar; Milton Clinkscales, trombone; Taylor Sexton, percussion; Phillip Hayner, Keyboard I, and Joy Hayner, Keyboard II.
