Wood is entering his seventh year as the head coach of both the
Piedmont College men's and women's tennis programs. After a successful
playing career at Piedmont in 1993 and 1994, Wood was named head
tennis coach for their dormant men’s and women’s teams
in 1999. He has immediately produced positive results, recording
a 136-107 overall record for both teams in his six years as head
coach. During his tenure, the men’s team has won the GSAC
championship six times, while the women’s teams completed
two championship runs.
During his tenure, Wood has been voted GSAC Men’s Coach of
the Year five consecutive seasons. He was named GSAC Women’s
Coach of the Year in 2004 and most recently in 2006.
Wood’s
most prominent highlight as coach came during the 2003-2004 season
when his men’s team was ranked as high as 23rd nationally
in NCAA Division-III and earned the school’s first-ever berth
in the Division-III National Tournament.
Wood also coached
participants in the Division-III men’s singles championship
in 2004 and 2005 and men’s doubles championship in 2005. In
addition, Wood’s players earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association
(ITA) All-America honors in singles in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005.
The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) also
awarded Piedmont players with first-team All-America accolades in
singles and doubles in 2001-2002 and 2002-2003.
Wood was also a member of the Atlantic-South Regional Advisory Committee
for NCAA Division-III men’s tennis. Wood earned his bachelor’s
degree in History from the University of Georgia in 1998 and went
to complete his master’s degree in Public Administration from
Piedmont in 2004. He has been a member of the United States Professional
Tennis Association since 2001 and achieved P-2 certification in
2005.
Wood and
his wife Jennifer have three children, Payton, Abby, and Graham
(born August of 2006).
