2001-2002 Season In Review

This 2002-2002 Georgia Cup  was the closest competition to date.  Oglethorpe and SCAD battled from September to April with the lead never more than a handful of strokes separating the two teams.  Oglethorpe led by six strokes after the first tournament at the Tom O’Briant.  OU increased the lead to nine by picking up three strokes at the Greensboro Invitational.  SCAD shaved six strokes at Pine Needles to tighten the race.  Going into the last tournament at the Emory Invitational, Oglethorpe held a seven-stroke lead.  Oglethorpe fired an opening round 295 to pick up 12 strokes and led by 19 going into the last round.  SCAD cut eight strokes off the lead in round two but Oglethorpe held on for a narrow victory over SCAD.  Senior Clint Colbert fired a two-day 5-under 139 at Jekyll Island in mid March all but deciding the Player of the Year and earned a fourth straight All-State team berth.  Trent Erb, Corey Garner, and Chris Summers of Oglethorpe finished second, third, and fourth with Kevin Baker of SCAD finishing fifth.

2000-2001 Season In Review
The Georgia Cup  was now becoming a focal point of competition between the three in-state rivals.  A sixth tournament was added at Jekyll Island and all three rounds of Camp LeJeune’s 54-hole tournament were counted bringing the total rounds to 13.  Oglethorpe won their second Georgia Cup and Emory’s Jason Steinberg defended his Player of the Year title with an identical 75.09 scoring average from the previous season.  Steinberg edged Oglethorpe’s Robert Fink by .22 strokes, which wasn’t settled until the final day once again.  Clint Colbert from SCAD finished third, Brandon Davis of Emory finished fourth, and Trent Erb of Oglethorpe rounded out the All-State team.

1999-2000 Season In Review
The Georgia Cup significantly evolved in the 1999-2000 season from the one and two-day events to include all five tournaments in which the three teams competed in together.  The teams played twice in the fall and three more times in the spring season with Emory repeating as team winners.  A five player All-State team would be honored at the conclusion of the Emory Invitational at Royal Lakes Golf Club in April.  Jason Steinberg of Emory edged both Clint Colbert and Seth Adair of SCAD for Player of the Year honors.  Robert Fink of Oglethorpe and Mike DiLinardo of Emory tied for fourth and rounded out the first All-State team.  The Player of the Year and the All-State team was not decided until the last hole of the final round of the Emory Invitational and from that excitement the Geprgia Cup gained in stature.  Coach Fred Fruisen of SCAD kept season long team standings and individual standings that he updated after every tournament.  The players from the three individual schools were able to follow both the team and individual results from week to week.

1998-1999 Season In Review
This season’s Georgia Cup Tournament was played at the Wilmington Island Golf Club again but it was expanded to a two-day tournament.  Emory claimed the Cup with a convincing win over Oglethorpe and SCAD.  Emory had three teammates (Charles Frost, Jason Steinberg, and Mike DiLinardo) all tie for medalist honors with Frost winning the playoff on the first hole and earning Georgia Cup Player of the Year.

1997-1998 Season In Review
The Georgia Cup  was founded in the 1997-1998 season by charter members Emory University, Oglethorpe University, and Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) as a way to foster the spirit of camaraderie competition between the in-state NCAA Division-III schools.  Oglethorpe won the inaugural cup with a team total of 299.  The first medalists were 1998 All-American Tolliver Williams and Brent Bell of Oglethorpe.  The event was contested as a one-day event at the 1927 Donald Ross designed Wilmington Island Golf Club on October 5, 1997 near Savannah, Georgia.
