In the 2006 Great South Athletic Conference championship match this
afternoon, the Piedmont College volleyball team was defeated by top-seeded
Maryville College 30-28, 30-17, 28-30 and 30-22 and had to settle for
a runner-up finish. PC, who entered the tournament as the third seed,
rallied in the third set with four consecutive points after being down
28-26 but could not overcome the early deficit in the fourth and final
set.
Maryville clinched the GSAC's first-ever automatic bid

South title. For her efforts Jennifer Seivers, the Great South's Player
of the Year, was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player.
Freshman Nikki Cole led Piedmont offensively with 15
kills and B.J. Ostrzycki notched 34 assists. Defensively Jill Sparger
and Mandi Harmon combined for 22 digs and Sarah Lane recorded two total
blocks.
The Lady Lions finish
the 2006 season with an overall record of 23-12. Additionally, the team
placed five players on the Great South All-Academic Team, three players
on the All-Conference Team and one player on the All-Freshman team.
