With steady rain throughout the Piedmont College men's soccer team scored
the game-winning goal with less than a minute to play in regulation
this afternoon at Walker Field to defeat visiting Hampden-Sydney College
4-3. In a closely contested match with both teams trading scoring opportunities
the entire time, it was Piedmont who took the lead for good with only
seconds to spare.
After trailing 1-0
at the half Drew Griffin took over offensively scoring three goals in
the first 13 minutes of the second half. Hampden-Sydney quickly responded
with a pair of goals in the next seven minutes to knot the game at three
goals apiece.
With the clock under
a minute in regulation, Josh Seabrook hit a one-timer on a loose ball
from the top of the box for the game-winner. The Tigers threatened momentarily
on the ensuing kick-off but when Rob Nix cleared the ball the scoring
chance was squelched.
The victory moves
Piedmont to 8-7 overall and drops Hampden-Sydney to 8-4-2 on the year.
The Lions will conclude the regular-season on Tuesday, October 24th
with a trip to Great South Athletic Conference opponent LaGrange College
in LaGrange, GA with game time scheduled for 7:00.
