Team Opens Series With Win Over Maryville
Returning to Great South Athletic Conference action
this afternoon the Piedmont College baseball team defeated visiting
Maryville College at Loudermilk Field by the score of 6-3. After being
shutout for the first six innings the Lions rallied to score six unanswered
runs in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to the victory.
The Scots scored single runs in the first, fifth and
sixth innings and carried a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Lions plated six runs on seven hits and held on to the three-run
margin for their second conference victory of the season.
Matt Burgess was
impressive on the hill going 8 and 2/3 innings allowing only two runs
on six hits while striking out three while Tom Dimitroff came in to
record his third save of the season. Offensively Justin Vorherr, Cole
Spedale and Andy house recorded a pair of hits apiece while Tyson Baxter
notched a clutch pinch-hit in the Lions sixth inning.
The victory moves Piedmont to 15-19 overall and 2-2
in the Great South Athletic Conference. The Lions will face the Scots
in a continuation game tomorrow along with the third game of the series
all beginning at 3:00.
