Team Sweeps Spelman In GSAC Regular-Season Finale
In the final Great
South Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season senior Meredith
Ray returned to the mound where she picked up a pair of victories over
visiting Spelman College by the scores of 10-0 and 11-5 at PC's Walker
Field. The Lady Lions pounded out 17 hits and capitilized on nine Jaguar
errors en route to the sweep.
In the first game
the Piedmont College offense was dominant notching 10 earned runs on
eight hits including a grandslam in the park homerun from Leah Della
Torre. Ray was impressive on the mound going five innings striking out
nine hitters while only allowing two hits and facing two more than the
minimum.
In the second game the Lady Lions found themselves down
4-0 in the bottom of the third but rallied to tie the score at four
runs apiece by the fifth inning. PC then proceeded to explode for seven
runs in the sixth and despite allowing a single run in the seventh cruised
to the six-run victory. Ray picked up the victory in relief going four
innings of shutout relief while striking out five.
The victories move
Piedmont to 18-17 overall and 8-4 in the Great South Athletic Conference.
The women will wrap-up the regular season next Tuesday, April 17th as
they host Emory University at Walker Field beginning at 5:00.
