Team Sweeps Pair Of Games In Virginia Beach
In a non-conference
doubleheader this afternoon the Piedmont College baseball team extended
its winning streak to three games with victories over Christopher Newport
University and Virginia Wesleyan College 7-5 and 15-8 in Virginia Beach,
VA. The victories mark the first doubleheader sweep of the season for
the Lions who improve to 13-19 overall.
In the first game
PC never trailed and started the scoring in the second and third innings
with single runs. The Captains were able to tie the game briefly in
the fourth but PC tacked on three runs in the fifth on a two-out three-run
homer from Zac Stein, the first of his career. The Lions added two insurance
runs in the eighth on a Matt Devito two-run double and held the lead
as Tom Dimitroff pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the
season.
After a short break
the Lions returned to action to take on Virginia Wesleyan at the Pennisula
Pilots Stadium. PC's offense exploded for 15 runs on 14 hits and scored
in six of the nine innings to win the seven-run victory. Evan Nissley
led the offense going 4-6 with a pair of runs scored while Justin Vorherr
chipped in going 3-5 with two runs scored. Andy House continued his
hot hitting going 3-6 with a game-high six RBI's.
On the mound Matt
Burgess and Spencer Shelton recorded the pitching victories. Dimitroff
threw three innings of scoreless relief picking up a save and closing
the second game. The Lions will return to action again tomorrow, April
6th as they take on Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach, VA
starting at 2:00.
