Men's Golf Continues Steady Improvement At 36th Annual MCCS Intercollegiate

The Piedmont College men's golf team continued its steady improvement this weekend as the Lions broke the school's 54-hole team score record by 11 strokes at the 36th Annual Marine Corps Collegiate Invitational at Camp LeJeune, NC. The Lions shot a 54-hole total of 906 (299-310-297) and finished 13th on the Scarlet Course.

The Marine Corps Intercollegiate in one of the nation's elite small college golf tournaments and features 32 teams playing in a dual format. The collegians play in a 54-hole stroke play event against each other, while also playing the first two days with Marines from the military base at Camp LeJeune, NC in a Pro-AM event. The college field splits up on Sunday and features an 18-hole event both the Gold and Scarlet courses.

The Lions' 54-hole team score of 906 set a new modern era school record bettering last year's team score at the MCCS Intercollegiate by 11 strokes.

Piedmont's Andy Cartwright fired a final round 71 (+1) to finish in a tie for 18th on the Scarlet Course.

After 36-hole PC stood in 29th place out of 30 collegiate teams as Matt Howell's 148 was good for a tie for 85th overall. The junior posted a 72 (+2) on the Scarlet Course and a 76 (+4) on the Gold Course.

Ryan Cobo continued his improved play with a 54-hole total of 76-77-73--226.

The Lions will wrap up the 2006-07 season on April 15-16 when they travel to Hayesville, NC to participate in the Young Harris College Spring Invitational at The Ridges Resort and Golf Club.
