Team Posts Back-To-Back Victories Over Wesleyan
The Piedmont College
baseball team exploded for a season-high 13 runs on 10 hits to power
past visiting non-conference opponent Wesleyan University by the score
of 13-6 this afternoon at PC's Loudermilk Field. Junior Matt Devito
recorded his first career grandslam in the third inning, which proved
to be the game-winning runs, with a towering blast to dead centerfield.
After the Cardinals
got on the board in the second inning with a single run, the Lions responded
with a pair of runs in the bottom half capped off by Jared Moon stealing
home with two outs. Wesleyan tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the
third but PC roared back with five runs in the bottom half, four of
which came off Devito's blast.
The Lions took an 8-2 lead after five innings but Wesleyan
responded with four runs in the top of the sixth. Piedmont wasted no
time in the bottom half tacking on five more runs capped off by a Justin
Oates two-out bases clearing double.
Andy Graf went five innings allowing only two earned
runs while striking out three and recording his first victory of the
season. B.J. Hampton pitched the final three innings forcing three double
plays and picking up his first save of the year.
Devito led the offense going 2-3 with four RBI's while
Justin Oates went 1-3 with four RBI's as well. Luke Dombrowsky chipped-in
with a 2-3 day from the plate including a steal of home while Cole Spedale
was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The victory moves
Piedmont to 6-10 overall and drops Wesleyan to 0-2. The Lions will return
to action again tomorrow, March 12th, as they host Hampden-Sydney College
at Loudermilk Field starting at 7:00.
