Team's Furious Ninth Inning Rally Comes Up Short Against CNU
The Piedmont College
baseball team entered the ninth inning down five runs and mounted a
strong comeback but fell one run short and dropped the close 8-7 decision
to visiting Christopher Newport Unviersity this afternoon at Loudermilk
Field. The Lions trailed the entire game and clawed their way back to
within two runs in the eighth but could not overcome the deficit in
the ninth.
CNU jumped out to
a 4-0 lead in the fourth capped off by a three-run homer by shortstop
Trae Bailey. The Lions answered with a single run in the fifth on an
Andy House single and a pair of runs in the sixth as Tyson Baxter notched
an RBI single and the Captains made a two-out error.
The score remained
5-3 entering the ninth when CNU notched three insurance runs. The Lions
roared back with four runs but could not find the answer and dropped
the one-run loss.
Travis Hunt led
six hitters with multiple hits going 4-6 with a run scored. House chipped-in
going 3-5 and Cole Spedale went 3-5 with an RBI and run scored.
The loss drops PC
to 4-10 overall. The Lions will host Wesleyan University tomorrow, March
10th at Loudermilk Field beginning at 7:00.
