Eliminates Lady Lions From NCAA Tournament
The Piedmont College
women's basketball team saw its 2006-2007 season come to an end tonight
with a 83-68 loss to Randolph-Macon College in the first round of the
2007 NCAA Division-III Tournament in Ashland, VA. R-MC rallied from
a six-point halftime deficit to advance to tomorrow's round of 32.
The Lady Lions came
out of the gates quick and managed to open up a 12-point advantage at
28-16 when Yetta Bailey converted a pair of free-throws with 5:15 left
in the half. R-MC chipped away and a jumper with eight seconds left
sent the Yellow Jackets to the locker room down 36-30.
R-MC came out in
the second-half and tied the game at 40 on a three-point play with 17:40
left in the game. After a jumper by Adcock made the score 42-40 in favor
of Piedmont, the Jackets went on a 12-0 run and took a 10-point lead
on a three-pointer to make the score 54-44. Piedmont battled back and
cut the R-MC advantage to 60-57 when Trimiar made a lay up with 6:07
to go in the game.
With the score
66-61 with 4:31 left in the game, R-MC closed out the game with a 17-7
run to seal the win. During that run, R-MC went 12-fo-12 from the line.
Piedmont was paced
by Bailey who tallied 25 points and nine boards. Sheena Trimiar and
Beth Adcock also chipped in with 12 points. The Lions made 25-60 shots
on the night for a 41.7 percentage from the field and out rebounded
the Jackets 38-34.
The loss ends the Lady Lions' record season at 18-8 overall. The NCAA
Tournament appearance was the first in the history of the PC women's
basketball program.
