With only eleven hits to be had by both teams, the Piedmont College
baseball team prevailed in extra innings this afternoon to defeat visiting
non-conference opponent Adrian College 1-0 at PC's Loudermilk Field.
Both teams had multiple scoring opportunities but it was the Lions who
found a way to score in the bottom of the tenth to record their third
victory of the season.
After regulation
was not enough to decide the winner, Cole Spedale led off the bottom
of the tenth with a sharp single through the left side. Justin Oates
proceeded to put down a sacrifice bunt that was not handled by the defense
putting runners at first and third with no outs. After a strikeout and
an intentional walk senior Trey McCay recorded the game's only RBI with
a fielder's choice, plating Spedale from third.
Matt Burgess and
Josh Strickland combined for 10 scoreless innings, striking out six
hitters and walking only three. Strickland picked up the victory on
the mound, the first of his career. Spedale led the offense going 2-3
with the games only run scored.
The victory moves
Piedmont to 3-6 overall. The Lions will return to action again on Saturday,
March 3rd as they host Marietta College, the defending NCAA Division-III
National Champions, with game time set for 1:00.
