Team Splits Pair At Maryville Invitational
The Piedmont College
softball team traveled to the Maryville College Invitational this afternoon
where they defeated Emory & Henry College by the score of 6-4 and
then fell to Thomas More College 6-5. The Lady Lions used a pair of
three-run innings to overcome EHC but allowed three unanswered runs
in the final two innings against TMC to drop the close decision.
The split moves the Lady Lions to 4-3 overall. The women will return
to action again on Wednesday, February 28th as they travel to Great
South Athletic Conference host Wesleyan College in Macon, GA with first
pitch slated for 5:00.
Against Emory & Henry the Lady Lions allowed a pair of runs in the
top of the first but responded with three in the bottom of the first
on RBI singles from Emily Maxey and Meredith Ray and a two-out bases
loaded walk to Nicole Payne. The Lady Lions tacked on three more insurance
runs in the bottom of the fourth on a Michelle Broderick RBI single
and Marissa Harding two-run single. Ray went the distance on the mound
for the victory allowing only one earned run while striking out six.
In the second game PC looked to be in total control after a five-run
fourth inning capped off by a Megan Day two-out triple that plated three
Lady Lions. Piedmont's defense could not hold Thomas More as the opponents
notched three unearned runs in the final two innings to sneak away with
the one-run victory. Ray took the complete game loss on the mound despite
allowing zero earned runs and striking out three.
